Information on voting in local government elections is available in eleven foreign languages. The Ministry of Transport and Local Government has a special website dedicated to general municipal elections. The information was published for the 2018 local government elections, but is also valid for the extraordinary elections for the amalgamated municipality of Borgarfjarðarhreppur, Djúpavogshreppur, Fljótsdalshérað and Seyðisfjarðarkaupstaður. 
Foreign nationals are entitled to vote in local government elections in Iceland after certain periods of residence in the country as follows:

  • Nordic nationals: After three consecutive years’ legal residence. For the elections on 19 september 2020, this will mean that they must have been resident since before 19 september 2017.
  • Other foreign nationals: After five consecutive years’ legal residence. For the elections on 19 september 2020, this will mean that they must have been resident since before 19. september 2015.
